OILERS HALT MAVS WITH 4-1 WIN

Tulsa scores two in the second period and two more for insurance late in victory over Kansas City at BOK Center.

TULSA, OK – The Tulsa Oilers (3-0-1) scored twice in the second period and twice more in the third to topple the Kansas City Mavericks (2-1-1) by a 4-1 score Friday at the BOK Center.

Oilers goaltender Devin Williams and Mavericks goalie Nick Schneider stood tall in the first period, as Williams stopped all 11 Kansas City shots and Schneider turned away all nine Tulsa attempts. The Oilers killed off all three Mavericks power plays in the scoreless opening frame.

Rookie defenseman Kyle Rhodes gave the Oilers their first lead when he snuck a quick shot under Schneider’s blocker midway through the second period. Tulsa made it 2-0 when Adam Pleskach found a loose puck in the crease and chipped it into the back of the net soon after Rhodes’ goal. Kansas City had an answer when Greg Betzold tipped a shot past Williams on the Mavericks’ fifth power play to cut their deficit to one heading into the second intermission.

Tulsa added an insurance goal when Roman Ammirato fired a wrist shot past Schneider from the left circle early in the final stanza. A Mavericks mistake behind their own net gave the Oilers their fourth goal late in the game, which went off a Kansas City skate. The goal was credited to Alex Kromm who earned his second straight first star honor with a multi-point game.

Williams stopped 23 of 24 shots to move to 3-0-0 on the season, while Schneider stopped 35 shots in his first loss.

The Oilers return to the BOK Center Saturday and host the Wichita Thunder at 7:05pm in the first meeting of the season with yet another longtime rival.
