THUNDER TOP OILERS TO STAY UNBEATEN
Wichita takes first Stonewolf Casino Cup match-up 3-1 Wednesday at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
TULSA, OK – The Wichita Thunder stayed unbeaten with a 3-1 win over the Tulsa Oilers Wednesday at the BOK Center in the first meeting of the season in the Stonewolf Casino Cup series.
The Oilers held a narrow 9-7 shots advantage in the first period, but Wichita carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Lane Bauer scored the Thunder goal from the edge of the crease when he tapped in a centering pass from Louick Marcotte for his second marker of the season.
Wichita capitalized on a brief 5-on-3 power play when Travis Brown hopped out of the penalty box and shot a puck toward the net that was tipped in by Mark MacMillan to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. Late in the frame, ECHL Player of the Week Kyle Platzer raced after a loose puck and gave Wichita its third goal on a buzzer-beating breakaway tally.
Devin Williams came into the game to start the third period, replacing starting goaltender Jake Hildebrand. Williams faced only four shots and stopped all four. Evan Richardson scored his third goal in as many games to spoil Wichita goalie Joel Rumpel’s shutout bid, but the Thunder finished off the game for their fifth straight win to start the season.
