Late third period goal sends game to overtime, before Kalamazoo tops Tulsa 35 seconds into the extra period.

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Tulsa Oilers dropped a heartbreaker in overtime 3-2 to the Kalamazoo Wings Wednesday at the Wings Event Center in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

The two teams skated through a scoreless first period, as Wings veteran goaltender Joel Martin stopped all 12 Tulsa shots, and Oilers rookie goalie Jamie Phillips turned away all nine Kalamazoo attempts. Tulsa was unsuccessful on two power plays, while Kalamazoo failed to score on their only man-advantage.

The Wings hit the crossbar twice, and Phillips kept the puck out of the net again in the second period. The Oilers broke the scoreless deadlock with 2:32 left in the frame, when Miles Koules beat Martin after he split the Wings’ defense to extend his point streak to four games. Tulsa led 1-0 after two.

Kalamazoo tied the game at 1-1 off a an offensive zone faceoff win, when Scott Henegar snapped a shot off the crossbar and in. The Oilers jumped back in front with 5:34 to play, when Darcy Murphy snuck a shot under the blocker of Martin, but the Wings forced overtime with 34 seconds left, scoring with an extra-attacker on when Tyler Shattock ripped a shot from the half wall through a screen.

In overtime, Kalamazoo capitalized on an Oilers turnover, when Tanner Sorenson buried the game-winning goal on a breakaway 35 seconds into the extra frame.
